Warner/Chappell Music, the global music publishing company of Warner Music Group, is celebrating after an incredible night at the BRITS which saw its songwriters contribute to seven awards.
Stormzy scored a double being named British Male and winning Best Album for Gang Signs & Prayer. Rag’n’Bone Man won British Single for the multi-Platinum selling ‘Human’ and Gorillaz picked up their first BRIT when they were named British Group after the huge success of their Humanz album.
Awards weren’t just limited to UK songwriters, with Kendrick Lamar being crowned International Male Solo Artist and giving a triumphant performance of his songs ‘Feel’ and ‘New Freezer’.
In addition to these artist wins, Warner/Chappell songwriter Ian Kirkpatrick co-wrote Dua Lipa’s global smash ‘New Rules’, which helped her bag a double victory as British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist. MNEK co-wrote ‘Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2’, a standout track from Stormzy’s Gang Signs & Prayer.
The evening also saw a moving performance of ‘Live Forever’ from Liam Gallagher to mark the resilience of the people of Manchester after the horrific bomb attack last year. Rag’n’Bone Man partnered with Jorja Smith, this year’s Critics’ Choice winner, to perform a powerful version of his ballad ‘Skin’. Stormzy finished the show in barnstorming style with a politically charged version of his hits ‘Blinded By Your Grace’ and ‘Big For Your Boots’.
Mike Smith, Managing Director of Warner/Chappell Music UK, says: “I’d like to congratulate all our amazing songwriters on their BRIT Award wins. The BRITS is always an incredible night for British music, but this year was a truly historic night for British urban music with Stormzy walking off with two major awards. His has been at the heart of popular culture over the last year and I’m thrilled that the awards reflect his impact. I particularly want to shout out our brilliant A&R Amber Davis who has supported Stormzy from the start of his amazing career.”
“I’d also like to congratulate Damon Albarn and the whole Gorillaz team on winning British Group. Damon continues to push the boundaries with his songwriting, as do Gorillaz as a whole project – the latest album has some of their best work on it. I’m thrilled that they have finally won a BRIT award – they thoroughly deserve it!”
“It was great to see Rory win British Single of the Year 12 months after picking up the Critics’ Choice award. He is the biggest breakthrough artist we’ve seen for years and ‘Human’ is a fantastic song that resonated with millions of people – he thoroughly deserves this further recognition.”
“Kendrick Lamar confirmed his status as a global megastar with his eye catching performance. He’s a gifted songwriter who writes complex and brilliant music which has captured the attention of fans around the world.”
“Finally, I’d like to congratulate Ian Kirkpatrick, a producer and writer who is in the global premier league when it comes to songwriting. He’s worked with the likes of Justin Bieber and Jason Derulo and bringing him in to work with Dua Lipa to co-write ‘New Rules’ was a masterstroke that has helped her breakthrough to become a huge star.”
